... emigrated to the USA in 1930 – arriving in New York on the day after her 18th birthday – and initially lived with her elder sister Christina Matheson. She worked in domestic service for four years, and in 1936 she married Fred Trump, who was one of New York's biggest real estate developers.
Fred Trump was the son of German immigrants. The family had changed its name from Drumpf at some time during the Thirty Years' War (1618-48). One of Fred Trump's tenants was Woody Guthrie, who wrote the song Old Man Trump about an incident that led to Trump's investigation by the Civil Rights Division of the US Justice Department in 1973. (Woody Guthrie died in 1967.)
Mary Anne Trump became a naturalised US citizen in 1942. She and Fred had five children, of whom Donald (born 1946) was the fourth; the eldest, Maryanne (born 1937) became a federal judge.
Fred Trump began suffering from Alzheimer's disease in the 1990s, and died in 1999 aged 95. Mary Anne died the following year, aged 88.
